1 General Background and Mechanistic Details of Grignard Reaction 

Among the most powerful tools in the synthetic organic chemists arsenal are organometallic compounds and metal-mediated transformations. The literature involving organometallic intermediates has literally exploded in the past 30 years, and the rate of publication in this area continues to accelerate. While many transformations involve heterogeneous conditions (metal-solution interface), the majority of these reactions involve discrete organometallic species.

It is interesting to note, however, that most of the systems studied supporting the diffusion-free in solution theory involve primary halides with no functionality next to the halogen (most of these systems have remote double bonds). 

Most of Walborsky s model compounds have Jt-clouds next to (or close to) the halogen, and hence surface adsorption may be more favored with these systems prior to or simultaneous with electron transfer.
