Table 1-5-2 summarizes some of the mechanisms that control gene expression in eukaryotic cells. 

Studies of IFN expression, structure, and function have provided a number of scientific advances. The study of transcription of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) and analysis of IFN-induced proteins have provided not only a tool to observe the complexities of inducible gene expression in eukaryotic cells but also led to identification of important regulators of physiological processes. 

Gene expression in eukaryotes is usually regulated at the level of transcription initiation by a complex of RNA polymerase and an array of regulatory proteins that bind in and around the DNA promoter.
