Gelling fibers

Since organogelators are in crystalline or lyotropic aggregate states in a gel. the nature of their intermolecular interactions becomes a factor of paramount importance in determining the nature and the intensity of emitted radiation from a gelled sample. Molecular proximity opens possible reactive channels for the excited states that are not available in dispersed solutions. For example, it has been shown that CAB dimerizes in its neat solid, liquid-crystalline, and gelled (fiber) states when exposed to UV radiation [47,48]. (See Structure I.) In dilute isotropic solutions, no photoreaction is observed because the time required for an... [Pg.304]

For Saffil alumina fiber, aluminum oxychloride [Al2(OH)jCI] is mixed with a medium molecular weight polymer such as 2wt% polyvinyl alcohol. The aqueous phase contains an oxide sol and an organic polymer. The sol is extruded as filaments into a coagulating (or precipitating) bath in which the extruded shape gels. The gelled fiber is then dried and calcined to produce the final oxide fiber. This solution is slowly evaporated in a rotary evaporator imtil a viscosity... [Pg.149]

Fiber drawing is carried out in the course of sol to gel conversion at viscosities greater than 1 Pas (1 Nm s). The gelled fibers are heated to obtain glass fibers. [Pg.196]

The addition of an a-hydroxycarboxyhc acid to a tetraethylene, propylene, diethjiene, or hexylene glycol titanate gives water-soluble complexes suitable for gelling aqueous solutions of hydroxyl polymers, such as poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), or cellulose (qv) derivatives. These are useful as binding agents for glass fibers, clays (qv), and paper coatings (85). [Pg.146]

Gel coat In RP processing a gel coat on the outer surface can be used to ensure a smooth surface appearance and a tough surface. It could contain a thin synthetic fiber veil to improve performance of the gel coat and/or a surfacing mat. It is a quick setting plastic and gelled prior to reinforcement layup. The gel coat becomes an integral part of the finished RP product. [Pg.511]

Glass Fibers and Cellulosic Fibers. Glass fibers and cellulosic fibers are specifically disclosed as preferable reinforcing fibers for a gelling solution... [Pg.288]

Psyllium is an excellent dietary source for both soluble and insoluble fibers and has been used in supplemental and food products for its beneficial health effects. The strong water-absorbing and gelling capacities have made it a great challenge to incorporate psyllium in foods at the level needed to claim health benefits on the label. This review is focused on the approaches to improve the functionality. [Pg.193]

With the exception of starch, many biopolymers cannot provide nutrition for humans and other omnivorous animals. In human foods biopolymers are used as additives that can improve texture, viscosity, fiber content, and other properties of prepared foods, without providing direct nutritional values. Examples of such utilization are the addition of pectins, agar, and other gums to foods to achieve thickening and gelling effects. Another example of potential large-scale utilization of cell wall biopolymers is the dramatic improvement in the texture and rising of breads prepared from com and other starches by the addition of xylans (78). [Pg.6]

The ability of certain galactomannans to form gel structures when mixed with these non-gelling polysaccharides implies that a network is formed by the interaction of unlike chains. Fiber diffraction evidence, and indications from computer model-building191,19- (dis-... [Pg.288]
