Technically, GE gasifiers can be used to gasify all kinds of coals. However, coals with low inherent moisture (<8wt %), low ash content (<13 wt %), low AFT (<1300 °C), high heating value (>25MJ/kg), and low impurities content (Cl, As, S, etc.) are strongly recommended.

In industrial practice, it has been observed that the scale-up of Texaco (not GE) gasifiers from about 15t/day (in Montebello) to 150t/day (in Ruhrkohle) and to 1000-1200 t/day (in Cool Water) was quite satisfactory. However, when conditions were scaled up to about 2400 t/day (Tampa size), lower carbon conversion per pass was observed at the larger diameter and gasifier size, which indicates that the current scale-up method is not sufficient. Therefore, more systematic research work is necessary to establish a more reliable scale-up method.

Hydraulic transport can be achieved using a coal-water slurry, which can be efficiently pressurized by means of displacement pumps up to 70-100 bar with no inert gas detriment [1]. In addition to stability and viscosity, the main measure for slurry quality is the solids concentration. This determines the energy density and the amount of water, which hampers process efficiency.
