Gastroenteritis vitamin

Antimicrobial factors reduce the destruction of essential nutrients from microbes in the gastroenteric system or increase the biosynthesis of vitamins or other growth factors. [Pg.433]

Malabsorption of vitamin A occurs associated with diarrhea, intestinal infections, and infestations (Rosenberg et aL, 1977 Mansour et aL, 1979). Children with a recent history of diarrhea are at higher risk of developing clinical evidence of deficiency than those without (Sommer, 1982a). Sivakumar and Reddy (1972, 1978) used labeled vitamin A to demonstrate a depressed absorption of vitamin A in acute gastroenteritis and in respiratory infections. Presumably this was primarily due to excessively rapid passage more than to a defective intraluminal hydrolytic system, because providing a vitamin A supplement to children with diarrhea results in improved absorption (Sivakumar and Reddy, 1978). [Pg.310]

There is an indisputable relationship between the occurrence of infectious disease and xerophthalmia. This was recognized in the first global survey conducted in 1964 and is illustrated in Table XIV taken from that publication (Oomen et aL, 1964) that shows the prevalence of xerophthalmia in relation to admission diagnosis for nearly 5700 preschool-aged children in one Indonesian hospital in the late 1950s. Clearly gastroenteritis/diarrhea and infectious diseases are a frequent accompaniment of xerophthalmia in this country known to have marginal intakes of vitamin A. [Pg.362]

Observational studies The effect of daily therapy with lyg alfacalcidol for 6 months on musculoskeletal function in elderly patients with reduced bone mass has been examined. Adverse effects reported included epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, agitation, chest pain, asthenia, dehydration, malaise, muscle spasm, pruritus and gastroenteritis. No serious adverse reactions or hypercalcaemia was observed [35 -]. No adverse events were associated with vitamin... [Pg.508]
