Widely dispersed in the earth s crust, zinc is mainly refined from sphalerite, (ZnFe)S, which often occurs with galena (PhS). Zinc is a white, lustrous, very active metal that behaves as an excellent reducing agent and that tarnishes rapidly. About 90% of the zinc produced is used for galvanizing steel. Galvanized steel (zinc coating of steel) is used primarily in rural or urban atmospheres for protection from atmospheric corrosion. Galvanizing will also resist corrosion in marine atmospheres provided that saltwater spray does not come into direct contact. The galvanic potential of metals can vary in response to environmental changes such as changes in fluid chemistry, fluid-flow rate, and fluid temperature. Organic coatings are applied mainly to mild steel structures and equipment. They are also used on aluminum, zinc-sprayed and galvanized steel, but to a lesser extent.
