Galvanized Steels, Zinc

Independent of the chemical structure, industrially available adhesives are characterized by the formation of strong adhesive bonds on the respectively pretreated surfaces of the materials described. This results in the criteria for adhesive selection described in Chapter 8.

Widely dispersed in the earth s crust, zinc is mainly refined from sphalerite, (ZnFe)S, which often occurs with galena (PhS). Zinc is a white, lustrous, very active metal that behaves as an excellent reducing agent and that tarnishes rapidly. About 90% of the zinc produced is used for galvanizing steel. Zinc forms colorless salts containing Zn2+ ions.

Six metals are included in the assembled records carbon steel, weathering steel, galvanized steel, zinc, aluminum and bronze. A total of 63 sites are found in the data base, with many sites reporting values for numerous metals. Sites were classified as marine, industrial, or urban. The site distribution is given below. 

Air pollution sources in the United States and Canada currently emit more than 25 million tons of sulfur dioxide each year. SO2 and wet acidic deposition are believed to cause damage to aquatic life, crops, forests, and materials. The effects on materials include damages to common construction materials including galvanized steel (zinc), paint, copper, building stones and mortar, as well as damages to cultural or historic objects and buildings.

Galvanized steel (zinc coating of steel) is used primarily in rural or urban atmospheres for protection from atmospheric corrosion. Galvanizing will also resist corrosion in marine atmospheres provided that saltwater spray does not come into direct contact. In areas where SO2 is present in any appreciable quantity, galvanized surfaces will be attacked.

On galvanized steel, tubercles may develop rapidly at breaches in the zinc layer. Attack is frequently highly localized if aggressive ions such as chloride or sulfate concentrate beneath deposits (Fig. 4.9). 

The galvanic potential of metals can vary in response to environmental changes such as changes in fluid chemistry, fluid-flow rate, and fluid temperature. For example, at ambient temperatures steel is noble to zinc (as in galvanized steel). In waters of certain chemistries, however, a potential reversal may occur at temperatures above 140°F (60°C), and the zinc becomes noble to the steel. 

The assessment for nonalloyed ferrous materials (e.g., mild steel, cast iron) can also be applied generally to hot-dipped galvanized steel. Surface films of corrosion products act favorably in limiting corrosion of the zinc. This strongly retards the development of anodic areas. Surface film formation can also be assessed from the sum of rating numbers [3, 14].

Organic coatings are applied mainly to mild steel structures and equipment. They are also used on aluminum, zinc-sprayed and galvanized steel, but to a lesser extent. The applications for organic coatings can be divided into three areas corrosion by atmospheric pollution, protection from splash by process liquors, and linings for immersion in process liquors [70-74]. 

Galvanized steel A zinc-coated steel sheet or plate with good corrosion resistance properties used for ductwork and other applications. 

The corrodent is a liquid metal in this form of stress corrosion cracking. Mercury at ambient temperature and metals including zinc (from galvanized steel-work) and copper (from electric cables) when melted during welding or in a fire cause rapid failure of certain metals. 

Paints are complex formulations of polymeric binders with additives including anti-corrosion pigments, colors, plasticizers, ultraviolet absorbers, flame-retardant chemicals, etc. Almost all binders are organic materials such as resins based on epoxy, polyurethanes, alkyds, esters, chlorinated rubber and acrylics. The common inorganic binder is the silicate used in inorganic zinc silicate primer for steel. Specific formulations are available for application to aluminum and for galvanized steel substrates.

The company s objective was to galvanize steel products of constant cross-section, such as reinforcing and structural steel, tubes, wire, and so on, on a more compact production line, using up to two to three times less zinc, with reduced energy consumption and the suppression of all forms of pollution. 

The U.S. accounts for almost one-quarter of worldwide slab zinc consumption and is the world s single largest market. About 80% of zinc is used in metal form, and the rest is used in compound form. In total, 90% of zinc metal is used for galvanizing steel (a form of corrosion protection) and for alloys, and is used in a wide variety of materials in the automotive, construction, electrical, and machinery sectors of the economy. Zinc compound use also varies widely, but is mainly found in the agricultural, chemical, paint, pharmaceutical, and rubber sectors of the economy.
