Gadolinium chelates some authors observed homogeneous enhancement of these lesions, some others a thin rim enhancement, whereas others did not find any enhancement (Mortel and Ros 2001 Maher et al. 1999 Martinoli et al. 1992 Murphy et al. 1989 Slone et al. 1993 Wohlgemuth et al. 1998). At MR cholangiography, bile duct hamartomas appear as multiple tiny cystic lesions that do not communicate with the biliary tree, helping in the differential diagnosis with Caroli s disease (Fig. 7.6b-d) (Luo et al. 1998). 

Magnetic resonance imaging may provide additional differentiation of unclarified findings - particularly in the diagnosis of haemangioma. Hypovascular lesions are detected more easily with SPIO-enhanced MRI, whereas detection and characterization of hypervascular lesions are improved with gadolinium-enhanced MRI.
