Toluene is a primary feedstock used to produce various organic compounds. It is used to produce diisocyanates. Isocyanates contain the functional group —N = C = O, and diisocyanates contain two of these. The two main diisocyanates are toluene 2,4-diisocyanate and toluene 2,6-diisocyanate. The production of diisocyanates in North America is close to a billion pounds annually. More than 90% of toluene diisocyanate production is used for making polyurethanes foams. The latter are used as flexible fill in furniture, bedding, and cushions. In rigid form it is used for insulation, hard shell coatings, building materials, auto parts, and roller skate wheels. 

Concern over energy conservation and safety has stimulated growth in applications for insulation and cushioning in transport. A healthy economy is also expected to increase the demand for cushioning in furniture, bedding, and flooring, as well as for packaging. Structural foams are widely used as substitutes for wood, metal, or unfoamed plastics.

Venezuela is emerging as a strong Latin American market for urethanes. A strong consumer demand and significant exports to Andean Pact countries have provided much of the growth. Continued increases in auto production, furniture/bedding, and some insulation markets should give further impetus to polyurethane demand. 

The furnishings market for flexible urethane foam can be divided into three major segments furniture, bedding, and carpet under-layment. These markets are supplied flexible foam by a larger number of firms known as the flexible slab foam industry which convert liquid chemicals to large foam buns made on a continuous conveyor. An infinite variety of cushion shapes are fabricated from the large foam buns. 

Textiles themselves are typically tested to BS 5438 [54] and this method is used in a number of product test specifications. Examples of products which comprise textiles on their own or in conjunction with other materials include protective clothing, upholstered furniture, bedding, tents, and marquees. These may sometimes use BS 5438(43) to specify a part of the product, but they are frequently specified according to a special test. In certain cases, these tests may be directly required by legislation, e.g., children s nightwear. 

Closed-cell foams are most suitable for thermal insulation and are generally rigid, while open-celled foams are best for car seating, furniture, bedding and acoustical insulation, among applications. These are generally flexible. 

Furnishing Materials As components of upholstered furniture, bedding, or carpeting, engineered fabrics have a unique role to play and strengthen their value with antimicrobial treatments.
