Fungicides containing

The recent reviews by Jager (11) and Kramer et al (12) describe the synthetic routes and biological activity of selected tritylimidazoles, trityltriazoles and other variously substituted N-azole fungicides. The information that follows will describe certain structural activity relationships of selected EBI fungicides containing pyridine and pyrimidine heterocyclic moieties. 

This group of fungicides contains several different subgroups, the chlorobenzenes, phenols, and the dicarboximide fungicides. 

Carbon disulfide (1) may be chlorinated by the action of chlorine in the presence of iodine catalyst (Scheme 15). The reaction probably involves initial addition of chlorine to the C=S bond followed by loss of sulfur dichloride to yield trichloromethanesulfenyl chloride (34) (Scheme 15). Trichloromethanesulfenyl chloride (34) is a synthetic intermediate in the commercial manufacture of several valuable agricultural fungicides containing the NSCCI3 moiety (see Chapter 11, p. 235). An important example is the foliage fungicide captan (35), which is prepared from butadiene and maleic anhydride (36) via tetrahydrophthalimide (37)... 

Manufacture of fungicides containing 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline (dicloran) has been discontinued in the US. 

Cadminate [Mallinckrodt], TM for a turf fungicide containing 60% cadmium succinate and 40% inert matter. 

Dithiocarbamate fungicides containing cbfferent metal ions such as Zn, Mn " " and Fe were resolved using a C q column that performed better than the conventional RP-C18 sorbent [123]. However, the method did not allow the speciation of dithiocarbamates that contain no metal. Finally, C q—fullerene was reported to be an effective sorbent material for preconcentrating mercury compounds, and to be preferable to RP-C18 on account of its large specific surface area and volume, which endow it with an increased physical sorption capacity [124]. Also recendy, Pereira et al. [125] developed a new alternative for Cd and Pb determinations at low concentrations, using the preconcentration of a Cjio/CyQ mixture coupled to thermospray flame furnace atomic absorption spectrometry.

Toxic effects of copper on plants occur very rarely, coming into question only in the case of increased concentrations of copper in the soil after excess applications of fungicides containing this element. Whether a particular copper concentration in plants is insufficient or, on the other hand toxic, depends on the plant species as well as on the physico-chemical composition of the soil.

Fungicides containing pyrimidine moieties with relevant use in agriculture have been known for over 30 years. The most prominent compounds belong to the ani-linopyrimidine class. Mepanipyrim (5), pyrimethanil (6) and cyprodinil (7) are the most important examples of this class (see Chapter 14.2) ...
