Functionality, level

Radioisotopes have become very important ia the practice of modem medicine, for both diagnosis and treatment. Some diagnoses are done by injecting a radionucHde ia a biochemical form such that it goes to a particular organ, and the measured radiation then allows the functional level of that organ to be determined. A common treatment is to expose a portion of the body, for example a tumor, to radiation from a radioisotope with the source either internal or external to the body. Another usage iavolves radioactively labeled antibodies (see Immunoassay). 

The gas turbine is a complex system. A typical control system with hierarchic levels of automation is shown in Figure 19-3. The control system at the plant level consists of a D-CS system, which in many new installations is connected to a condition monitoring system and an optimization system. The D-CS system is what is considered to be a plant level system and is connected to the three machine level systems. It can, in some cases, also be connected to functional level systems such as lubrication systems and fuel handling systems. In those cases, it would give a signal of readiness from those systems to the machine level systems. The condition monitoring system... 

Clearly, at this functional level of operation, there is little margin for error and this type of program probably will not tolerate the degree of dirt loading and other problems associated with frequent boiler startups.

Thus there is sufficient ground to cover at the functional level even after successful genetic characterizations that justifies the development of technologies for functional genomics, especially for high-throughput monitoring of proteomes and metabolomes. 

RyR3 has been reported to be the major isoform in some smooth muscle tissues (Neylon et al 1995), but RyR2 has been reported to be the primary isoform expressed in urinary bladder smooth muscle (Chambers et al 1999), in which CICR has been definitively established (Ganitkevich Isenberg 1992, Imaizumi et al 1998, Collier et al 2000). RyRl has also been reported in smooth muscle at the expression and functional levels (Neylon et al 1995). It should be noted that determination of isoform expression has largely been reported using non-quantitative RT-PCR methods, with associated interpretive difficulties. 

Finally, the natural course of illness can help to distinguish BPAD from schizophrenia. Many patients with BPAD resume normal functioning between episodes of illness, although those with severe variants of BPAD not uncommonly become chronically ill. Most patients with schizophrenia, in contrast, are unable to achieve their premorbid functional level between exacerbations of illness and many experience a gradually declining course. 

With reference to a solvent, this term is usually restricted to Brpnsted acids. If the solvent is water, the pH value of the solution is a good measure of the proton-donating ability of the solvent, provided that the concentration of the solute is not too high. For concentrated solutions or for mixtures of solvents, the acidity of the solvent is best indicated by use of an acidity function.
