Functional Other Technologies

In addition, since the complete machine is required to perform some particular function, other technologies influence its layout. For example, fluid mechanics is applied to the design of pumps and turbines, heat transfer and combustion technology to engines, and electromagnetism to electric motors and generators. 

Hybrid systems of acrylics with other technologies have been reported. Aciylic and epoxy polymers can be coupled through the use of 2-methacryloloxyethyl phosphate. The phosphoric acid functionality reacts with epoxy and the methacrylate group copolymerizes with the acrylic backbone [ 145] (Scheme 14). 

Chemical treatment is a class of processes in which specific chemicals are added to wastes or to contaminated media in order to achieve detoxification. Depending on the nature of the contaminants, the chemical processes required will include pH adjustment, lysis, oxidation, reduction or a combination of these. Thus, chemical treatment is used to effect a chemical transformation of the waste to an innocuous or less toxic form. In addition, chemical treatment is often used to prepare for or facilitate the treatment of wastes by other technologies. Figure 12 identifies specific treatment processes which perform these functions. 

The unique simplicity of TNT detection by this method renders the fabrication of an operable device built around amplified fluorescent polymer technology a relatively simple proposition in comparison to other technological platforms. The method relies purely on changes in fluorescence intensity. AH that is theoretically required is a means of introducing vapor samples to a conjugated polymer film, a light source to excite the polymer film, and a photodetector to measure the emission intensity as a function of time.

The antioxidant function may be in either R or R". Again, commercial development has not occurred due to an undesirable balance of other technological properties during vulcanization.
