Functional Group Derivatives

The synthesis of ovalicin was accomplished following a line of analysis which was totally different from that employed for the synthesis of the structural relative fumagillol. The plan for ovalicin was based on S-goal, appendage, stereochemical and functional group derived strategies. A key requirement for the synthesis was the stereospecific construction of the -l,4-pentadienyl subunit, which was achieved by a method of potentially wide utility. [Pg.176]

Fats and oils are hydrophobic, water-insoluble substances. The operational difference between them is simple fats are solid at room temperature oils are liquid at room temperature. Chemically, fats and oils are triglycerides, triesters formed from glycerol and three fatty acids. Let me remind you that an ester is a functional group derived by linking a carboxylic acid to an alcohol, with the elimination of a molecule of water ... [Pg.253]

Compounds containing the C=N functional group derivatives undergo anodic oxidation when the nitrogen atom bears an electron-rich heteroatom. Perhaps the simplest such species are aldoximes, which are anodically oxidized to nitrile oxides (34)38. The reaction was carried out in an undivided cell3 , hence the species 34 underwent immediate reduction to a nitrile (equation 19). However, since nitrile oxides are 1,3-dipolar species, one could in principle carry out the oxidation in a divided cell in the presence of a good 1,3-dipolarophile40 to effect the synthesis of substituted heterocycles. [Pg.620]

From a retrosynthetic point of view, the Meerwein-Eschenmoser-Claisen rearrangement shares the basic Claisen retron, a y,<5-unsaturated carbonyl compound, with other variants of the reaction. More specifically, its retron consists of a two-carbon chain branching off an allyhc stereocenter and terminating in an amide or a functional group derived thereof Such a motif can be readily identified in numerous natural products and other synthetic targets. [Pg.370]
