Functional and Decorative Coatings

Both functional and decorative coatings can be appHed to paper from latices. The aqueous dispersions can be used on conventional paper converting machinery which usually cannot handle hot melts and solvent coatings. The lack of fire hazard because of absence of solvents is an added advantage of the latex system.

Zinc alloys have good resistance to corrosion, and die-castings can be left as-cast However, in situations which are particulariy corrosive, chro-mating or anodising is used for added protection. Where functional and decorative finishes are required, the most widely used is chromium plating, and the best results are obtained when an initial layer of copper is followed by layers of nickel and chromium. Other finishes such as painting and plastics coating can also be applied. 

The volume of thermosetting powders sold exceeds that of thermoplastics by a wide margin. Thermoplastic resins are almost synonymous with fluidized-bed appHed thick-film functional coatings whereas thermosetting powders are used almost exclusively in electrostatic spray processes and appHed as thin-film decorative coatings. 

Most transport vesicles bud off as coated vesicles, with a unique set of proteins decorating their cytosolic surface. The coat has two major known functions. First, it concentrates and selects specific membrane proteins in a discrete portion of donor organelle membrane that will serve as origin to the transport vesicle. Second, the assembly of coat proteins into curved structures delineates the area of the forming transport vesicle. The size and curvature is a function of the coat composition. Thus, vesicles with similar vesicle coat have closely similar size and shape [3].
