Fulminic synthesis

Finally, the condensation of unsaturated compounds with fulminates known as the fulminic synthesis represents the simplest case of synthesis from nitrile oxides. Barnes has reviewed in detail the work carried out up to 1953 thus we shall be concerned here only wdth more recent publications or those of general interest. [Pg.373]

Of the few recent publications in this field two papers are noteworthy these are Cramer s report on the synthesis of 3,3 -diisoxazolyl in 60-70% yield from acetylene and nitrogen oxides and on the synthesis of a mixture of 5,5 -diisoxazolyls [34 35, R = Me2C(OH)] from fulminic acid and diacetyiene. ... [Pg.375]

Ref 130, p 220) and by Great Britain (Vol 3, C498-R). These rockets utilized BlkPdr as proplnt, fuse (Ref 122) and as an expl. Up to the middle of the last century the history of pyrotechnics is the history of BlkPdr. Even now, as will be discussed in Section 7, large quantities of BlkPdr are used as an igniter. By the late 18 th century a new age in pyrotechnics commenced thru the synthesis of K chlorate (Vol 2, C190-R), the discovery of Fulminates (Vol 6, F216-R) and the identification of the minerals which would impart color to a flame. The discovery of electricity brought about pure chemicals and hence, better flame colors, new oxi-... [Pg.982]

Uses Determining fat content in milk solvent for alkaloids, fats, oils manufacturing isovaleric acid, isoamyl or amyl compounds, esters, mercury fulminate, artificial silk, smokeless powders, lacquers, pyroxylin photographic chemicals pharmaceutical products microscopy in organic synthesis. [Pg.669]

For the terrorist, TATP and HMTD offer easy sources of primary explosives. Consulting the do-it-yourself literature, it can be seen that there are two other commonly recommended primary explosives—lead azide Pb(N3)2 and mercury fulminate Hg(ONC)2, but these are difficult to prepare cleanly. The synthesis of diazodinitrophenol (DDNP) (Fig. 2.5), common in commercial detonators, is reported in such publications, but apparently is rarely attempted by clandestine chemists. Typically, the brisance of a primary is less than TNT, but the efficacy is the fact that a shock wave can result from a relatively mild insult. [Pg.40]

The chemistry of nitrile oxides, in particular their application in organic synthesis, has been continuously developed over the past two decades and represents the main theme of this chapter. The parent compound, fulminic acid (formonitrile oxide), has been known for two centuries, and many derivatives of this dipole have been prepared since that time. Several simple and convenient methods for the preparation of nitrile oxides have evolved over the years. Dehydrochlorination of hydroximoyl chlorides was first introduced by Werner and Buss in 1894 (1). A convenient synthesis of isoxazoles was reported by Quilico et al. (2 ), and then the discovery of nitrile oxide cycloadditions to alkenes was subsequently noted by the same group (5). [Pg.362]

Flash thermolysis of 4-substituted isoxazol-5(4//)-ones can be used to generate alkynes, isocyanides, aminoisocyanides and ketenimines (77C258, 76HCA2615). Decomposition of the oxime (538) at an oven temperature of 450 °C produces C02, benzonitrile and fulminic acid (539 equation 5) (79AG(E)467). This method thus offers a safe alternative to the synthesis of fulminic acid from the explosive metal fulminates. [Pg.463]

By means of a synthesis of isoxazol derivs with fulminic acid, it was establish that the structure of the acid reported in Ref a is incorrect. It should be 3-isoxazole carboxylic acidl... [Pg.67]

Wohler s synthesis of urea was the result of experiments begun in 1823, in which he investigated the salts of cyanic acid, known as cyanates. In 1824 Wohler showed that the empirical formula of silver cyanate was AgNCO. Justus von Liebig, who had studied the compound silver fulminate, had come up with the same formula for an entirely different compound. (These two compounds were structural isomers.) Isomerism was a novel idea at that time, as it was believed that each compound had a unique formula No two compounds could have the same formula. (Berzelius had first described the phenomenon of isomerism in 1831.)... [Pg.1306]

OTHER COMMENTS use as a solvent for resins, fats, alkaloids, etc. used in the manufacture of isoamyl compounds, lacquers, smokeless powders, artificial silk, mercury fulminate, and pyroxylin other uses include organic synthesis, preparation of pharmaceutical products, microscopy, and determination of fat in milk. [Pg.685]
