The semipositive mold (Figure 2.2c and d) combines certain features of the open flash and fully positive molds and makes allowance for excess powder and flash [4]. It is also possible to get both horizontal and vertical flash. Semipositive molds are more expensive to manufacture and maintain than the other types, but they are much better from an applications point of view. Satisfactory operation of semipositive molds is obtained by having clearance (0.025/25 mm of diameter) between the plunger (top force) and the cavity. Moreover, the mold is given a 2-3° taper on each side. This allows the flash to flow on and the entrapped gases to escape along with it, thereby producing a clean, blemish-free mold component. [Pg.159]

Fully Positive. Also called a direct positive mold (Fig. 10.5), this is solely used for large deep draw parts where maximum density must be obtained. With RTSs, any loose resin and reinforcement should be removed and the affected area cleaned and dried. It may be useful to roughen surrounding areas, to obtain better adhesion. For superficial damage (to gelcoat only), apply catalyzed/activated resin to the damaged area and allow to set/solidify. Film, such as transparent ceUulose, tape or TP polyester, may be used to keep the resin in position and impart a smooth surface finish. Apply a thicker film of resin than usual, to allow for shrinkage. When the repair patch has fully hardened, dress the resin back to the correct contour of the molding. [Pg.475]

The objective is to have the vacuum surge tank as close as possible to the forming station and the vacuum control valve. Use of flexible vacuum hose with connections eliminates elbows, tees, and tubing reducers. All valves must be capable of operation at the full open position. To utilize fully the rapid vacuum capability provided by the surge tank, the mold must be able to take advantage of all vacuum pressure available.
