Recently, a granulated manganese (Ill)-saltren complex [35] has been incorporated in bleach boosters and a powder detergent in Europe. Activated by peroxide, the catalyst has a bleaching optimum around pH 11, and is most effective between 30 and 60°C. It bleaches on fabric but also fugitive dyes in solution and prevents graying of white fabrics. It is gentle to fabrics and fibers and compatible with a number of enzymes [36]. [Pg.384]

Reaction to Pretreating. One particular method of setting fugitive colors on fabrics reported by Adams (1) was of particular interest because it involved compounds containing potassium and sulfur, both elements detected in the dress fabric x-ray analysis. If a paper becomes extremely fragile when immersed in water or has dyes or image materials that are water-soluble or otherwise fugitive, immersion in water cannot be used for deacidification. One option is to use one from a range of non-aqueous treatments. Calcium and magnesium are both in Group II of the Periodic Table. The next heaviest element in the group is barium, which has a hydroxide, and unlike those for Ca and Mg, is soluble in methanol. Aniline Yellow, C6H5.N2.C6H4NH2.HCl, is the simplest azo-dye. As the color is fugitive it is not now used as a dye. It forms, however, the starting point in the preparation of other dyes, as it can be diazotized and coupled with amines or phenols. [Pg.556]

Reductive after-scouring, typically with alkali (soda ash or caustic) and hydrosulfite, is a common practice on polyester and polyester-cotton blends. This is done to remove fugitive disperse dye from the surface of the cotton component of the blend. This discharge of hydrosulfite can cause high immediate oxygen demand, as well as shock loading of waste treatment systems [55]. New diester disperse dyes require only alkaline (not reductive) after-clearing. [Pg.293]
