Operation of a reactor in steady state or under transient conditions is governed by the mode of heat transfer, which varies with the coolant type and behavior within fuel assembHes (30). QuaHtative understanding of the different regimes using water cooling can be gained by examining heat flux, q, as a function of the difference in temperature between a heated surface and the saturation temperature of water (Eig. 1). [Pg.211]

Hafnium-free zirconium alloys containing tin or niobium are used for tubing to hold uranium oxide fuel pellets inside water-cooled nuclear reactors. Zirconium —niobium alloys are used for pressure tubes and stmctural components in Canadian, the former USSR, and Germany reactor designs. [Pg.433]

The combustion chamber of a modem steam generator is a large water-cooled chamber in which fuel is burned. Firing densities are important to ensure that the chamber wall metal temperatures do not exceed the limits of failure of the tubes. Firing densities are expressed in two ways volumetric combustion intensities and area firing intensities. The volumetric combustion intensity is defined by equation 23,... [Pg.528]

In a typical PAFC system, methane passes through a reformer with steam from the coolant loop of the water-cooled fuel cell. Heat for the reforming reaction is generated by combusting the depleted fuel. The reformed natural gas contains typically 60 percent H9, 20 percent CO, and 20 percent H9O. Because the platinum catalyst in the PAFC can tolerate only about 0.5 percent CO, this fuel mixture is passed through a water gas shift reactor before being fed to the fuel cell. [Pg.2412]

Aluminium hydroxide is essentially non-toxic, but does require high addition levels to be effective. As a result, the physical properties of the compound usually suffer. Its fire retardancy action results from the endothermic reaction which releases water under fire conditions and produces a protective char . The endothermic reaction draws heat from the rubber/filler mass and thus reduces the thermal decomposition rate. The water release dilutes the available fuel supply, cooling the rubber surface and mass. [Pg.149]
