Friendships

During the week in Stockholm I also visited the University of Stockholm and the Royal Technological Institute. Subsequently, I also visited and lectured at Uppsala University and the Universities of Gothenburg and Lund. We were received everywhere with great friendship and hospitality, ending our most memorable trip in Copenhagen, from where we flew home. It was time to come back down to earth from the skies and resume our life.

One of us (C.L.L.C) would specially like to thank her many research students (past and present) for their unwavering support, friendship and loyalty, which enabled her to achieve what she now has. During a full life this great Swedish chemist met practically all the important men of science of his day and won their affection as well as their highest regard. He is said to have had a genius for friendship. Nevertheless, his early career was filled with a battle for acceptance. 

The author of the present review wishes to express his warmest gratitude to Dr. Georges Jeminet, Universite de Clermont (France) who has strongly contributed to promote interest in sulphur compounds in this Laboratory and initiated a long collaboration and friendship. 

My coworkers and I feel deeply lucky and indebted to have met then Dr. Fritz Kalhammer from EPRI. Not only was EPRI s financial support significant for strengthening our NEMCA work in Patras, but most importantly, Dr. F. Kalhammer, a former student of G.M. Schwab, understood and described NEMCA as deeply, eloquently and concisely as nobody, in my opinion, had ever done before. Fritz s continuing support and friendship is gratefully acknowledged, as is that of Dr. H. Putter of BASF, another prominent electrochemist whose continuing collaboration is most valuable, as is BASF s, Dupont s and EU s continuing financial support. 

He was a sociable man whose friendship, laced with humor, was evident to all an entertaining companion with a stockpile of amusing stories to suit any occasion. To sum up his life, if example is The School of Mankind, then Maurice Stacey ran a good school. 

Motivation and satisfaction. Mentors enhance satisfaction in an individual by providing support, friendship and guidance. The mere realization that an organization cares and invests... 

The nature of the mentoring relationship resembles that of friendship. It is (or should be) a voluntary relationship in which the mentor functions as the trusted friend who listens, guides and enables through skilful questioning and, if appropriate, making direct suggestions. Under no circumstances has the mentor any responsibility for the mentee s success or failure. Mentees are solely accoimtable for decisions and their outcomes. 

Although rapport-building somewhat precedes directionsetting, it is by no means as lengthy and intense as in sponsorship mentoring deep friendship is not required mutual respect, goodwill and relevance of experience are important. 

Integrity emanates from Yngve and to win his friendship has been a source of great satisfaction for me. The development of our relation has been eased by the affinity between our wives and children which has allowed us to spend extended periods in each others homes without strain. 

Students who join the Ohrn research group soon discover that graduate school, in Yngve s view, is a license to learn. The scientific individuality of each of Yngve s present and former students has been built on this foundation of freedom and on the patient friendship of an exemplary advisor. 

This work is dedicated to Professor Yngve OHRN at the occasion of his 65" birthday. His advice, experience and friendship have been both appreciated and important for the achievement of our study which has found its origin in the Propagators in Quantum Chemistry book he wrote with Professor Jan LINDERBERG. 

It is a pleasure for us who are friends, colleagues, and collaborators, to offer this contribution to a volume published in honor of Yngve Ohm s bS " birthday. For most of his career, Yngve has been interested in response properties of various systems to various probes, and we offer this contribution in that spirit. The Generalized Oscillator Strength, the subject of this paper, is the materials property that describes the response of a medium to swift particle, and thus, perhaps, an appropriate subject for this volume. Mostly, we are happy to take this opportunity to thank Yngve for his help, inspiration, and friendship over the years. 

Once again I express my thanks to Richard Leff, whose friendship I deeply appreciate and without whose assistance I would not be here now.
