Friends and associates

Aaron and Olive Ihde continue to live in Madison in their charming house in the University Arboretum. Those who have visited their home have fond memories of the beautiful setting and warm hospitality that they encountered there. In recent years a number of graduate students have had the good fortune to participate in History of Chemistry evening seminars held in the Ihde home, sessions in which Olive Ihde joined Aaron and his students as an active participant. Those of us involved with the preparation of this book join with all of their other friends and associates in wishing them both many more happy and productive years. 

The final chapter in this volume covers the use of sulfur monochloride in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds and is by O.A. Rakitin and L.S. Konstantinova (Zelinsky Institute, Moscow, Russia). It includes a survey of the extensive work carried out by these authors and other friends and associates of the late Charles Rees on heterocycles containing heterocycles with up to five sulfur atoms and often many nitrogen atoms. In addition, the chapter also shows how sulfur monochloride may be used advantageously in the synthesis of other sulfur heterocycles. 

One of the early examples of mercury poisoning may have involved the so-called Jark year" i 16931 in the life of Sir Isaac Newton, when it was reported that Newton broke away from friends and associates. 

While working on this, the third, edition of the Cookbook I was introduced to Brett s long-time friend and associate, Richard C. Miller. Richard sent me a copy of a handwritten note (via intermediary Michael Andrews a friend of Brett and Richard), which he said was Brett s formula circa 1971 personally given to him by Brett. The handwriting is Richard s, who told Michael he had written it down while visiting Brett in his darkroom. It is different from the 1982 formula. To make matters more complicated, it is similar, but different, from Brett s formula given to me by Cole. 

Countess Wachtmeister was one of the many titled early converts to Theosophy. She joined the T.S. in 1881 and became a close friend and associate of Madame Blavatsky. The nobility included the Baroness de Pallandt who joined the Golden Dawn early in 1891 and resigned in April 1893. A note in a complete list of G.D. members 1887-97 described her as no good . 

In addition he wishes to acknowledge the assistance and cooperation of friends and associates who have read and criticized the manuscript, and of all others who have in any way assisted him in the large task which he has attempted. 

Raymond B. Seymour is known to many friends and associates as Ray, a Plastics Pioneer, as Dad to his four children and by a variety of grandfatherly terms by his 10 grandchildren, but to his former students including, Peter Tsang, Jose Sosa, Don Owen, Clem LaSada, Hubert A. Wood, Murray Clark, G. Allan Stahl, David... 

All of his friends and associates will long remember, with warmest feelings, being associated with him and wish that he were here today to lend his charm, warmth, wit and enthusiasm to this symposium. We all know we have lost a wonderful friend. 

At the time his groundbreaking book on Synectics was published (Gordon 1961), he was the president of the Invention Research Group in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was also lecturing at Harvard. In the same year, Gordon established, with three friends and associates from ADL, a company called Synectics Inc. Its mission was to continue and expand their research on the inventive process. After several years, Gordon left Synectics Inc. to focus on the potential applications of the method of Synectics in education and founded the company Synectics Education Systems. His new company was focused on creativity and education and on the promotion of... 

This monograph would not have been possible without the suggestions and advice of many supportive colleagues. 1 am especially grateful to my coauthors, experts in the fields of joint arthroplasty, spine, as well as in the testing and evaluation of UHMWPE, who have cheerfully contributed chapters to this book on relatively short notice. 1 have also included acknowledgements at the end of chapters to thank my many friends and associates for their contributions. 

There are strong and clearly established links between these risk factors, the behavioral manifestations and reactions that result from exposure to them, the short-term negative effects on the developing child that flow from this exposure, and finally, the destructive, long-term outcomes that (a) too often complete this developmental progression and (b) ultimately prove very costly to the individual to caregivers, friends, and associates and to the larger society (p. 68). 

The writer has drawn at will on the several books mentioned above, some of the tables being taken nearly bodily from them, and has also derived much help from Findlay s Thase Rule (London, 1920) and from The General Principles of Chemistry by Noyes and Sherrill (Boston, 1917). He wishes especially to express his gratitude for the inspiration and helpful suggestions from Dr. W. K. Lewis of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and from his other friends and associates at the Institute and of the E. B. Badger Sons Company. Finally, he wishes to express his appreciation of the assistance of Miss Mildred B. McDonald, without which this book would never have been written. 

Successful conclusion of any effort depends heavily on understanding by one s family. We cannot thank enough Raksha Trivedi and Cathy Culbertson for this. We also thank our children, friends, and associates for their consideration and tolerence during our preoccupation with Maleic Anhydride,... 

The work of constructing even the simplest time series of chemical indicators for any period before the 1950s is tedious, complicated, and labor-intensive to a degree we would have found difficult to credit before our innocent embarkation on the task. We are correspondingly grateful to those colleagues, friends, and associates who have sustained our labors even in the darkest hour of suspect sources, dubious data, and conflicting curves.
