French forces

Mf". Force or energy of expls, which is also called specific pressure (In French, force specifique). "f is the pressure (in atm) per unit area (cm2) that would be obtained by the expln of unit weight (1 g) in unit volume (1 cc), if the ordinary gas laws were applicable at that density... [Pg.383]

In 1927, Heitler and London used valence bond theory to treat the H2 molecule but to treat larger molecules, further simplifications were needed. In 1931, Erich Hiickel introduced an extremely simple approximation which could be used to treat the 7i-electrons in flat organic molecules such as benzene, napthaline, and so on. This approximation yielded matrices to be diagonalized, and it is a measure of the state of computers at that time to remember that during World War II, Alberte Pullman sat in a basement room in Paris diagonalizing Hiickel matrices with a mechanical desk calculator, while her husband-to-be Bernard drove a tank with the Free French Forces in North Africa. Alberte s hand-work led to the publication of the Pullmans early book Quantum Biochemistry. ... [Pg.55]

This echoes Marlowe s French-bom queen Isabella, who wishes, O, that mine arms could close this isle about, / That I might pull him to me where I would (2.4.16-17). But just as Isabella s wish is utterly futile, so the vehicle of Salisbury s image undoes its tenor England cannot move, and though Salisbury sees this as a weakness in the present situation, it is by the same token a strength, for its status as a fixed island also provides it with a natural defence, and indeed before the end of the play we see the French forced to accept the necessity to flee. [Pg.103]

British chemist Lyon Playfair proposes that artillery shells be filled with cacodyl cyanide as a way to help British and French forces to capture Sevastopol from the Russians. The proposal is rejected. [Pg.284]
