A mass of polymer will contain a large number of individual molecules which will vary in their molecular size. This will occur in the case, for example, of free-radically polymerised polymers because of the somewhat random occurrence of ehain termination reactions and in the case of condensation polymers because of the random nature of the chain growth. In reality, many other chemical and photochemical processes take place leading to a sort of steady-state concentration of O3 which is a sensitive function of height. These markers mostly concerned indices of lipid peroxidation in the serum and also in the erythrocytes of affected subjects, and a correlation was seen with the extent of liver injury. The mechanisms of free-radical damage in this model will be difficult to determine in the clinical setting, but the similarity to the situation with transplanted liver surest that the above discussion of the role of XO activation, Kupffer cell activation and induction of an acute inflammatory response would be also relevant here. It will be important to establish whether oxidative stress is important in the pathogenesis of ischaemic hepatitis and in the problems of liver transplantation discussed above, since it would surest that antioxidant therapy could be of real benefit. [Pg.243]

The concurrent slow homolytic reaction gives rise to free radicals [14]. The occurrence of the homolytic reaction can be revealed by the consumption of free radical acceptors [8,15], CL [16], or NMR spectroscopy [17,18]. The introduction of phosphite into the hydroperoxide-containing cumene causes an initiation, pro-oxidative effect related to the formation of free radicals [6]. The yield of radicals from aliphatic phosphites is much lower (0.01-0.02%) than that from aromatic phosphites (up to 5%) [17].
