Frameworks of drugs

From a more practical point of view, the major problem with the incentive-sensitization theory of drug addiction is the lack of evidence for its occurrence in the human addict. Thus, Volkow et al. (1997b) showed that in cocaine postaddicts no behavioral (as expressed by drug-induced high) or biochemical sensitization (as expressed by drug-induced increase of extracellular DA in the striatum) can be demonstrated. As a matter of fact, a decrease in these measures was observed. These observations put a major question mark on the validity of the DA sensitization theory as an explanatory framework of drug addiction. [Pg.367]

In systems designed for applications, more components are usually present. Oils are of high relevance in this context, but pharmacologically relevant compounds may also be added to Pluronics, since these BCPs are also discussed in the framework of drug delivery. [Pg.9]

The nursing process is a framework for nursing action consisting of problem-solving steps that help members of the health care team provide effective patient care. It is both a specific and orderly plan used to identify patient problems, develop and implement a plan of action, and then evaluate the results of nursing activities, including the administration of drug . [Pg.46]

The core legislation governing the regulation of drugs in the EU is contained in two base Directives, which provide the framework for regulation of medicines at national level. These are ... [Pg.7]

It should again be emphasized that at the onset of a new drug program, there are only small amounts of drug substance at hand. One of the first tasks for the preformulation scientist is to establish the framework within which the first clinical batches can be formulated. To this end it is important to know with which common excipients the drug is compatible. Below, the distinction will be made between solid and liquid dosage forms. [Pg.185]

The discovery of the base-paired, double-helical structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) provides the theoretic framework for determining how the information coded into DNA sequences is replicated and how these sequences direct the synthesis of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and proteins. Already clinical medicine has taken advantage of many of these discoveries, and the future promises much more. For example, the biochemistry of the nucleic acids is central to an understanding of virus-induced diseases, the immune re-sponse, the mechanism of action of drugs and antibiotics, and the spectrum of inherited diseases. [Pg.215]

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in pharmaceutical research has been used primarily in a classical, organic chemistry framework. Typical studies have included (1) the structure elucidation of compounds [1,2], (2) investigating chirality of drug substances [3,4], (3) the determination of cellular metabolism [5,6], and (4) protein studies [7-9], to name but a few. From the development perspective, NMR is traditionally used again for structure elucidation, but also for analytical applications [10]. In each case, solution-phase NMR has been utilized. It seems ironic that although —90% of the pharmaceutical products on the market exist in the solid form, solid state NMR is in its infancy as applied to pharmaceutical problem solving and methods development. [Pg.94]

Pharmacogenetics provides a rational framework to minimize the uncertainty in outcome of drug therapy and clinical trials and thereby should significantly reduce the risk of drug toxicity. The reader is referred to the Internet sources in Table 20.1 for more details on pharmacogenetics and drug development. Potential improvements in patient inclusion criteria will be addressed later in this chapter. [Pg.767]
