Frame grabber

This research examines the feasibility of a technique based upon the CT principle using a microfocus X-ray source with an image intensifier while the examined object is being rotated The attainable enlargement is up to 200. The data to be processed is collected from the whole surface of the image intensifier by a frame grabber and noise suppression is performed. 

Many laboratories are equipped with commercial video frame grabbers and video image analysis systems, the operation of which is nicely explained by Russ (5). Many of the concepts involved apply both to video analysis and to the analysis of matrices obtained with a mechanical scanning stage driven by a stepper motor. Video scanning is very rapid, but slow mechanical scanning can be very precise and accurate. 

The fourth module is the control unit, consisting primarily of a state-of-the-art industry PC equipped with a suitable frame-grabber card for image frame acquisition, spectral and spatial real-time data evaluation and control of subsequent actuators or communication with process control systems. 

Pseudocolor images associated with photon emission are generated by the CCD image processor and transferred via video cable to a PCI frame grabber using the camera software (or equivalent).

A liquid drop (7) is suspended in an immiscible denser liquid (2) in a horizontal transparent tube which can be spun about its longitudinal axis, and the drop (7) elongates from a spherical shape to a prolate ellipsoid with increasing speed of revolution. A fundus camera was modified to provide video angiograms and to deliver one laser beam used to release the content of the liposomes and another laser beam to activate the photosensitizer. The first laser was also used to illuminate the fundus. The output of the charge-coupled device (CCD) camera was fed into a video image enhancer and recorded on magnetic tapes with a high-frequency video recorder. Later, the tape was played back, and video sequences were digitized with a frame grabber for subsequent analysis. 

Schlatterer and Schaloske (35) used a Data Translation frame grabber/processor model DT 2851/DT 2858 (Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany) with a resolution of 512 x 512 pixels and 256 grey levels.

Most image analyzers do basically the same operations described in this chapter, with obvious speed differences according to the software-hardware combinations used. In the web pages of each image analyzer are also the necessary software modules for the different frame grabbers present in the market as well as very useful macros (small routines that can be loaded into the image analyzer for automatic operations).
