The extent of process recovery is often limited by the fouling of membranes from sparing soluble precipitates. Antisealants are added during pretreatment to increase the solubility of salts likely to precipitate, enabling the membrane process to achieve a higher recovery before fouling occurs. Antisealants can be a number of polymeric substances (typically polyphosphates, phosphonates and polycarbonic acids), and as there is no treatment process to remove antisealant, they will be present in the membrane concentrate discharge. [Pg.21]

In this way, the pollutants are extracted from the turbid water and then degraded, without the need of a transmembrane pressure, avoiding the fouling of membrane, which is an expensive problem in case of pressure-driven membrane processes. [Pg.352]

Divalent cations, particularly calcium, have been shown to enhance fouling of membranes with natural organic matter (NOM).3 Because is it s acidic nature, NOM can form complexes with dissolved metal ions. The strongest bonds occur with calcium. This is a function of the size of the metal ion, it s electronic charge, and the... [Pg.197]

The additives (antifoam or stabilizers) to the culture medium may strongly interfere the UF process by reduction of the flux.56 UF-DF at a large scale is always carried out in cross-flow mode, discontinuously or continuously or in dynamic mode to reduce fouling of membranes.52... [Pg.554]

Microfiltration. Microfiltration, the use of tangential flow anisotropic membranes to permeate the product of choice while retaining solids, can be an attractive cell separation technique because it does not require the use of flocculants or filter aids. It is, in principle, a more technically sophisticated version of classic dead-end filtration processes. Microfiltration yields can be low due to progressive fouling of membranes. Advanced engineering has overcome many of the early... [Pg.1332]

Flux decline in UF tubular unit was observed, resulting from irreversible fouling of membranes by surfactants coming from radiopharmaceutical production. [Pg.851]

We have been studying this problem as an extension of our research on the fouling of membrane by the deposition of suspended matters (jL). We first studied on the resistance of gel layer to permeation (2), next on the characterization of ultrafiltration membranes O) regarding the solute rejection, and lastly on the effect of gel layer on the solutes rejection and fractionation. Though this paper is mainly concerned with this last aspect, we want to quickly review the previous results. [Pg.119]

The use of membrane reactors can be expected to expand dramatically in the future. The search for improved selectivity, permeability, stability and resistance to fouling of membranes will continue. [Pg.192]

Of particular interest in this study is the fouling of membrane processes by natural organics. Fouling depends on the characteristics of the natural organics. A detailed review of the characteristics of interest is required to highlight the factors that may influence membrane fouling. Membrane filtration... [Pg.34]
