The SELDl chip is very nice, but it does not compare to the DNA chips that everyone is talking about right now. There are chips with 100,000 and more spots that indicate the presence and the relative amount of (almost) every RNA in the cell extract. The protein biochemist would also like to have such a toy, ideally a chip on which he would only have to pour some cell extract and half an hour later it would teU him number, type, modification, and concentration of every protein in the broth. Daring people even demand chips that determine the concentration of metabolites such as glucose and lactate as well as oligo- and polysaccharides. [Pg.176]

In a cell there are a lot more protein species than RNA species (i.e., a protein chip would have to have many more spots than a DNA chip). Is that doable Theoretically, sure. You would just have to covalently stick a corresponding number of monoclonal antibodies to the chips—a minor task with a few hundred thousand highly specific, highly afhne monoclonal antibody species. Real life has even more trouble in store. Although it may be possible to bind the countless antigens to the countless antibodies on the chip, how would you determine the binding  [Pg.176]

One possibility would be to make two antibodies for every antigen—one bound to the chip and another fluorescence-marked detection antibody that binds to another epitope of the antigen. Once you have produced some hundred thousand monoclonal antibodies you should be in good practice, so a few hundred thousand more should not matter much. [Pg.176]

Another possibility would be to construct the protein chip as a sensor chip and detect the binding of the antigens via the plasmon resonance (Section 2.2.S.2). Can this method be miniaturized such that it measures the mass increase of the tiniest spots Can it register hxmdreds of thousands of spots fast enough I do not know, I know only that as yet there is no real [Pg.176]

As a grace note, the restaurant serves a fortune cookie on a plate with die diner s check. [Pg.154]

I once received a fortune cookie that captured the central thesis of this chapter. The fortune read An unexpected relationship will become permanent. The fifty people I interviewed for this project could not have known they were making a lifelong commitment to a medical view of their depression when out of desperation they chose to begin taking psychotropic drugs. They had laid the cornerstone for a life circumscribed by pills. Most are married to medications. [Pg.62]

Now the emphasis on the power of the formal approach to the study of dreaming should become clear even to those who still long for the mystique of fortune-cookie dream interpretation. We can see that, when the brain self-activates in sleep, it changes its chemical self-instructions. The mind has no choice but to go along with the programme. It sees, it moves, and it feels things intensely but it does not think, remember, or focus attention very well. This, in turn, shows clearly that our so-called minds are functional states of our brains. The mind is not something else - it is not a spirit, it is not an independent entity. It is the self-activated brain whose capacity for subjectivity remains to be explained but whose form of subjectivity can now be understood. [Pg.58]

Lecithins can be dissolved in oil, dispersed in water, or used as is, in release applications. Oil-free lecithins can be dry blended into breading, coatings, and spice or seasoning mixes for release of the coated food product from the food-contact surface. In food products that have a high surface area-to-volume ratio, like pancakes or fortune cookies, lecithin can be added directly to the product formulation to achieve release from the cooking/baking surface. Effective release depends on... [Pg.1763]

Inside the head, the surgeon does not find a brain, but rather another head, identical to the original and fully formed, but slightly smaller. The brain surgeon, slightly shocked, quickly removes this smaller head from the patient s skull cavity and begins to remove the skull cap of the smaller head. Inside the smaller head is yet another smaller head. He continues to find smaller and smaller heads until the last head, a few inches in length, sits in the palm of his hand. He opens this final head only to find a slip of paper about the size of a fortune in a Chinese fortune cookie. He holds the paper up. It reads, Inspected by number 47. ... [Pg.199]
