The simplest way to represent chemical substances is to use formulae, which are assemblages of chemical symbols. Formulae are particularly useful for listing and indexing and also when names become very complex. The precise form of a formula selected depends upon the use to which it is to be put.

The first step in the scale-up process is the selection of a suitable preliminary formula for more critical study and testing based on certain agreed-upon initial design criteria, requirements, and/or specifications. The work is performed in the development laboratory. The formula selected is designated as the (lx) laboratory batch. The size of the (lx) laboratory batch is usually 3-10 kg of a solid or semisolid, 3-10 liters of a liquid, or 3000 to 10,000 units of a tablet or capsule. 

If complicated formulas contain terms identical to those used in other cells, you can Copy that part of the formula and Paste it into the new formula. Here s one method before beginning to type the new formula, select the cell containing the formula you want to copy. In the formula bar, highlight the part of the formula you want to copy. Copy it, then click the Check Box in the formula bar. Now select the cell into which you want to type the new formula, type the new formula until you reach the part that you ve copied, then Paste in the formula fragment. 

Core flood tests were conducted to compare the performance from the surfactant-polymer option and polymer injection option at different injection schemes. The numerical values of the species coefficients of the reaction depend on the specific chemical formula selected. However, the ratio of any two coefficients is the same, regardless of the chemical formula used. 

Once the chemical formula is selected, the progress of the chemical reaction can be quantified. It is convenient to express the progress of the chemical reaction in terms of the chemical formula selected. To do so we define a quantity called the reaction extent.
