Many reactions are related to the interlayer cations (Fig. 2) hydration and solvation of the interlayer cations, complex formation, and exchange reactions with inorganic and organic cations. In solvates, a certain fraction of the interlayer molecules interact with the cations, the remaining molecules are filling the space between the solvation shells around the cations. When complexes form, the number of molecules directly coordinated to the interlayer cations is small and can be the same as in homogeneous solution.

Ether Formation and Exchange Reaction. The reaction of benzyl or diphenytmethyl alcohol under the activation of Pd(PhCN)2Cl2 provided the corresponding symmetric ethers (eq 169). The intermediate complex generated from the reaction of benzyl or diphenytmethyl alcohol with Pd(PhCN)2Cl2 could even react with an excess of another alcohol or arene to give unsymmetric ethers or di- or triphenylmethanes (eqs 170 and 171). ...
