Food and beverage processing

The work in the food and beverage industry is physically demanding and has a lower pay structure than for technicians working in the hydrocarbon processing industry. Many food and beverage companies work rotating shifts and use self-directed work teams.

Contamination from oils, fats, and organic solvents may occur during food and beverage processing or similar operations. These materials inevitably find their way into the FW system, and from there to the boiler, unless adequate precautions are taken. 

In certain direct steam-contact process applications (such as in food and beverage processing or pharmaceutical preparations) the use of amine-based products in steam and condensate systems is subject to legal restrictions. Also, the use of ammonia or amines may be dependent on the materials of construction employed or technical limitations (such as the risk of copper alloy corrosion).

Food and beverage processing represents an expanding area for process-scale microfiltration. Already in place are clarification systems for wine and beer, sugar, and gelatin, replacing existing practices such as diatomaceous earth filtration. Less attractive economically are miscellaneous waste treatment applications, for which microfiltration is often a sophisticated but expensive alternative.

Food and beverage processing can alter mycotoxins chanically. For example, microbes used in fermentations may transform mycotoxins to less toxic compounds. So far, only a few studies have been carried out concerning the modified mycotoxins in the barley-to-beer chain. The studies have indicated that bound DON appears to be fairly common in barley (Lancova et al., 2008 Zhou, He, Schwarz, 2008). Zhou et al. (2008) reported that bound DON in naturally infected barley was detected in almost 40% of samples and represented an additional 6-21% of DON determined by the standard gas chromatography method.

Finds application in food and beverage processing and in the lining of concrete tanks. 

CC. This also common grade contains 16 to 18% chromium and 11 to 14% nickel (316 SS). It also has molybdenum added to the nickel and chromium of the 304 material. The molybdenum is added to control pitting corrosion. Type 316 is used in chemical processing the pulp and paper industry for food and beverage processing and dispensing and in more corrosive environments. The molybdenum content must be a minimum of 2%.
