FOG sprays

Oil mist systems exist to provide eontinuous minute quantities of oil fog to the rolling assembly. These systems normally employ an additional pump, atomizer, and filter. These systems are gaining popularity in hot applieations, or with heaty thrust and radial loading. The oil fog is sprayed into the bearing ehamber with either a wet sump or a dry sump. The wet sump method provides the bearings with a bath (the liquiei oil level) and a fog spray. See Figure 11-1. 

Mar f chemical disinfectants (see also Chapter 10), in particular the halogens, some phenohcs and QACs, are inactivated in the presence of organic matter and it is essential that all cleaning materials such as buckets and fogging sprays are kept cleaa Halogens rapidly deteriorate at their use-dilution levels and QACs are liable to become contaminated with P5. aeruginosa if stored diluted. For such reasons it is preferable to store the bulk of the disinfectant in a concentrated form and to dilute it to the use concentration only as required. 

In a fog-spray tank, plating chemicals clinging to parts are recovered by washing them with a fine water-mist. The solution that collects in the fog-spray tank is returned to the process tank as needed. The added water helps to offset evaporative losses from the process tanks.

SAFETY PROFILE Moderately toxic by skin contact. Mildly toxic by ingestion. Severe skin irritant and moderate eye irritant. Combustible when exposed to heat or flame can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use CO2, dry chemical, water mist, fog, spray. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid and irritating fumes. See also ESTERS. 

Some chemicals can cause eye damage and even blindness. If your safety goggles are uncomfortable or if they cloud up, ask your teacher for help. Try lengthening the strap, washing the goggles with soap and warm water, or using an anti-fog spray.
