Fluothane®

Halothane. Halothane or Fluothane, 2-bromo-2-chloro-l,l,l-trifluoroethane [151 -67-7] is a colorless Hquid with a pleasant odor. Its lower flammability limit, 4.8% in 70% N2O/30% O2, renders it essentially nonflammable. It has a vapor pressure of 32.5 kPa (244 mm Hg) at 20 °C and is stable to soda lime. However, it is photochemicaHy reactive. [Pg.408]

Halothane (Fluothane) is a volatile liquid given by inhalation for induction and maintenance of anesthesia Induction and recovery from anesthesia are rapid, and the depth of anesthesia can be rapidly altered. Halothane does not irritate the respiratory tract, and an increase in tracheobronchial secretions usually does not occur. Halothane produces moderate muscle relaxation, but skeletal muscle relaxants may be used in certain types of surgeries. This anesthetic may be given with a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. [Pg.321]

The distribution of anesthetic throughout the entire body may be viewed as an equilibration process (Fig. 7.1.13), with tissues characterized by high blood flows reaching equilibration faster than muscle and fatJ4 Nevertheless, an anesthetic that is excessively soluble in blood will not partition substantially into brain and other tissues. The anesthetic properties of nitrous oxide and diethyl ether have been known since the 1840s. Zeneca Pharmaceuticals introduced the first modem inhalation anesthetic fluothane in 1957. Methoxyfluorane followed in 1960, enflurane 1973, isoflurane 1981, desflurane by Anaquest (Liberty Comer, NJ) in 1992, and sevoflurane by Abbott Laboratories in 1995J6 ... [Pg.81]

Halothane is a modem and widely used inhalation anesthetic. It begins to act very quickly, which is pleasing to patients, and it is very safe. The only drawback to using it is its hepa-totoxicity. It is used in both short and long-lasting surgical operations. The most common synonym of halothane is fluothane. [Pg.2]

Halothane (Fluothane) depresses respiratory function, leading to decreased tidal volume and an increased rate of ventilation. Since the increased rate does not adequately compensate for the decrease in tidal volume, minute ventilation will be reduced plasma PaCOz rises, and hypoxic drive is depressed. With surgical anesthesia, spontaneous ventilation is inadequate, and the patient s ventilation must be controlled. [Pg.303]

Brief History. B.W., a 75-year-old woman, fell at home and experienced a sudden sharp pain in her left hip. She was unable to walk and was taken to a nearby hospital where x-ray examination showed an impacted fracture of the left hip. The patient was alert and oriented at the time of admission. She had a history of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus, but her medical condition was stable. The patient was relatively obese, and a considerable amount of osteoarthritis was present in both hips. Two days after admission, a total hip arthroplasty was performed under general anesthesia. Meperidine (Demerol) was given intramuscularly as a preoperative sedative. General anesthesia was induced by intravenous administration of thiopental (Pentothal) and sustained by inhalation of halothane (Fluothane). The surgery was completed successfully, and physical therapy was initiated at the patient s bedside on the subsequent day. [Pg.145]

Fluothane was negative in two Tier I tests (and not subjected to the third), but was positive in the Drosophila test. If fluothane had also had a negative result in the mammalian cytogenetic test, it would be the only example in this series of a substance that was mutagenic according to the Tier II test but was not detected in Tier I. [Pg.214]
