It has recently been reported that cytochrome bj is required for full activity of F3 /5 H. The gene encoding this protein, difF, was cloned from petunia42 and shown to be exclusively expressed in flowers generating purple or blue petals. Inactivation of the gene reduced both F3 /5 H activity and 5 -substituted pigments, thus resulting in altered flower color.42... [Pg.10]

Microsomal preparations of Dahlia variabilis flowers have been reported to catalyze the 3-hydroxylation of the 6 -deoxychalcone, isoliquiritigenin, to butein.46 This enzyme activity was shown to be a typical cytochrome P450 monooxygenase that appears to be different from the F3 H, although its occurrence in other species remains to be investigated. [Pg.10]

An enzyme from the flowers of Sinningia cardinalis Reichsteinia cardinalis, Gesneriaceae) has hydrolase activity associated with microsomal fractions and requires NADPH as an essential cofactor (hydrolyase activity II). This enzyme converts naringenin (10) and apigenin (5) to eriodictyol (17) and luteolin (4), respectively (Dewick, 1989). The flavone synthase activity of this enzyme was abolished completely by treatment with the cytochrome P-450 inhibitor ancymidol, but the flavonoid 3 -monooxygen-ase activity was not altered. [Pg.160]

AAB inhabit the surface of flowers (pistil), fruits, and their fermented products such as vinegar, sake, wine, or beer (Asai 1968), and thus seem to be evolved in adapting to such a specific environment where high concentrations of sugars, alcohols, or sugar alcohols exist in highly aerobic conditions. In such a specific environment, there are many oxidative bacteria such as Burkholderia, Ralstonia, Xanthomonas, Frateuria, Sphingomonas, and Sinorhizobium, from a- to y-Proteobacteria, which have quinoproteins and flavoprotein-cytochrome c complexes. The former... [Pg.174]
