Flow diagrams combined-detail

The chemical engineer uses flow diagrams to show the sequence of equipment and unit operations in the overall process, to simplify visualization of the manufacturing procedures, and to indicate the quantities of materials and energy transfer. These diagrams may be divided into three general types (1) qualitative, (2) quantitative, and (3) combined-detail.

To study details of the activity and selectivity behavior of a catalyst, or to get a reaction engineering fingerprint of different catalysts a microprocessor controlled pulse reactor combined with a gaschromatograph or mass-spectrometer is a very powerful tool, especially if it is operated under temperature programmed conditions. Fig. 26 shows the flow diagram of such a unit developed in our laboratory /46/.

A schematic diagram shall show how the parameters for initiating protective actions are derived from monitored process variables, such as neutron flux, temperatures and flow, and how these parameters are logically combined.
