Flammable liquids methyl alcohol

Methyl alcohol liquid is stored in a vessel. Its vapor is inerted with nitrogen to a total pressure of 2 in of water gauge. Will the inerted vapor be flammable if it escapes the vessel Assume a temperature of 25°C. [Pg.288]

Alcohols. Methyl alcohol, and to a lesser extent ethyl alcohol, were used as freezing point depressants for many years. Their use now is minimal. When properly inhibited, alcohol-water solutions can be satisfactory coolants only under restricted conditions. Alcohol antifreezes fell into disuse because of their low boiling point (lower than that of water) and the danger of loss from boiling or evaporation. Alcohol volatilizes from hot surfaces much more readily than glycol coolant and can be a potential fire hazard. Methyl alcohol liquids are both flammable and poisonous. Methyl alcohol vapors are toxic when inhaled at high concentrations. [Pg.8]

Methyl Alcohol occurs as a clear, colorless, flammable liquid. It is miscible with water, with ethyl alcohol, and with ether. Its refractive index at 20° is about 1.329. [Pg.286]

SAFETY PROFILE Moderately toxic by skin contact, ingestion, and subcutaneous routes. Mildly toxic by inhalation. A skin and severe eye irritant. Flammable liquid. Dangerous fire hazard when exposed to heat or flame reacts vigorously with oxidizers. Explosive in the form of vapor when exposed to heat or flame. Vigorous polymerization reaction with methyl methacr date. To fight fire, use alcohol foam, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. DIPROPILENTRIAMINA (Spanish) (56-18-8) see 3,3 -iminodipropylamine. DI-w-PROPYLALUMINUM HYDRIDE (2036-15-9) Extremely flammable liquid. The pure material ignites spontaneously in air. Violent reaction with water. A powerful reducing agent. Violent reaction with oxidizers, alcohols, carbon dioxide, cresols, halogens, halogenated hydrocarbons, methyl ether, nitrogen oxides, phenols, sulfur oxides, tetrahydrofuran and many other materials. Store under inert gas, away from all other materials. Commercial product may be a 15 to 30% solution in hydrocarbons. See also next entry. [Pg.415]
