The detection of contamination with mercury is a very serious issue due to the extreme toxicity and ease of reaction of this heavy metal. Mercury is commonly used in many everyday applications, such as thermometry, barometry or scientific apparatus. Therefore, it is important to note the development of a fluorescent IIP membrane for detection of mercury [63], This membrane was based on the combination of two fluorescent functional monomers, namely 4-vinyl pyridine and 9-vinylcarbazole. Binding of Hg2+ was proposed to be based on complexation of the metal ion with lone pairs of both pyridine and carbazole. The IIP membrane was capable of recognizing Hg2+in the linear range of concentrations from 5 x 10 7 to 1 x 10 4 M. Selectivity of the chemosensor was studied for a wide group of possible competitive ions and the chemosensor responded to all of them in the presence of a fixed amount of Hg2+ at 1 x 10 5 M. Nevertheless, the highest influence on recognition properties was observed in the presence of Cu2+ (4.87%) and Pb2+ (4.57%), which are still acceptable values for the successful detection of Hg2+. This progress stimulates further development of the MIP detection of ions. [Pg.182]

Experimental. All photodimerizations were carried out in a stainless steel fixed volume cell (1.75 cm ID with a 1.0 cm path length) with sapphire windows under the irradiation of a Hanovia medium pressure mercury lamp filtered through water and Pyrex for a 13.5 hour exposure. The cell and lamp assembly have been described previously (31). For selected runs a custom built 0.9 mL variable-volume pump was connected to the cell and the pressure was varied to determine the exact location of the phase boundary, based on light scattering measured in a Cary 2290 UV-Vis spectrophotometer (Varian Inst.). One major criticism of all previous US-assisted methods is that they have not been compared with their unassisted counterparts, so the influence of US on the results has not been quantified. This, however, is not the case with the method for pesticides in honey and that for the determination of mercury in biological materials proposed by Tu et al., which is based on acid leaching for 5 min, followed by simultaneous in situ derivatization and LLE for 40 min in the presence of sodium tetraethylborate and nonane, buffered at pH 7.0, under US [10]. The mixture was shaken by hand and sonicated at 40°C at a fixed US amplitude of 100% however, the characteristics of the US bath used were omitted. Its principle of operation is based on Boyle s Law, in that a fixed large volume of the gas at the unknown pressure is compressed to a fixed small volume. The pressure of the gas following compression is measured by a mercury manometer, and the initial pressure is calculated from this pressure and the volume ratio. Pressures as low as 10-6 mm. Hg can be accurately measured by this gage. A major cause for error is the presence of condensable vapors in the gas being measured. Under such conditions the pressure obtained with this gage is closer to the partial pressure of noncondensables than the total pressure. It is not exactly equal to the partial pressure of noncondensables, however, because the condensable vapors may exert a significant vapor pressure after condensation. [Pg.143]
