Most mycotoxin TLC analyses are accomplished on silica gel plates, and Rf values vary, depending on the silica gel used. The plates most often used in FDA laboratories are precoated with a 0.2S-mm layer of silica gel 60 (E. Merck, Darmstadt). Plates from other manufacturers may work equally well. Some acidic mycotoxins, such as citrinin, are best identified on silica gel plates impregnated with oxalic acid. The plate is dipped in a 10% solution of oxalic acid in methanol for 2 min, and air-dried overnight in a hood. The fumonisins are analyzed by using reversed-phase C]g plates. The best resolution is obtained in an unlined, unequilibrated tank (11). A trough in the bottom of the tank is usually used to minimize the volume of solvent needed.
