First fire composition

Ignition compositions Hot solid or liquid particles are desirable in igniter and first-fire compositions to insure the transfer of sufficient heat to ignite the main composition. Fuels producing mainly gaseous products are not commonly used. 

Potassium nitrate is frequently used in igniters and first fires. Compositions made with this oxidizer tend to have low ignition temperatures (typically below 500 C), and yet the mixtures are reasonably safe to prepare, use in production, and store. Potassium chlorate formulations also tend to have low ignition temperatures, but they are considerably more sensitive (and hazardous). ...

First fire pyrotechnic compositions are used to ignite other compositions which are less sensitive to initiation. An example of a first fire composition used in fireworks is blackpowder. The blackpowder is moistened with water containing dextrin and poured on to the top of the firework composition as shown in Figure 8.3.

Igniter composition used with pyrotechnic devices that is loaded in direct contact with main pyrotechnic charge. Pyrotechnic first fire composition compounded to produce high temperature. Composition must be readily ignitible, and be capable of igniting the underlying pyrotechnic charge. 

For pyrotechnic use it is combined with ferro silicon under the name of "Red Thermitwhich is used as a first fire composition for compositions which are difficult to ignite. The red thermit is said to generate no gas in the burning reaction, but truly a small quantity of gas is generated. 

The above compositions nearly satisfy all the three, but it is quite difficult to ignite them. Therefore in this case of the dragon it is necessary to use an ignition star as a first fire composition and in the case of the black willow stars to coat them first with the silver wave composition(l5 2(3)c) and then with the chrysanthemum 8, 6 and black powder one after another.
