RNA interference (RNAi) is a somewhat newly discovered part of our body s natural immune system. RNAi is not another form of RNA, but rather a sequence involving protein enzymes that block the action of certain foreign RNA, thus its name. Andrew Fire and Craig Mello won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their work with RNAi. [Pg.323]

The fundamental importance of this technique as a method to study the function of genes, as well as for its promise for leading to novel therapies in plants and animals was recognized by the Nobel prize committee in physiology or medicine who awarded the 2006 prize to the American scientists Andrew Fire and Craig Mello for this technique. [Pg.159]

Hospitals and other health care facilities may further classify disasters as either internal or external. External disasters are those that do not affect the hospital infrastructure but do tax hospital resources due to numbers of patients or types of injuries (Cans, 2001). For example, a tornado that produced numerous injuries and deaths in a community would be considered an external disaster. Internal disasters cause disruption of normal hospital function due to injuries or deaths of hospital personnel or damage to the physical plant, as with a hospital fire, power failure, or chemical spill (Aghababian, Lewis, Cans, Curley, 1994). Unfortunately, one type of hospital disaster does not necessarily preclude the other, and features of both internal and external disasters may be present if a natural phenomenon affects both the community and the hospital. This was the case with Hurricane Andrew (1992), which caused significant destruction in hospitals, in clinics, and in the surrounding community when it struck south Florida (Sabatino, 1992), and Hurricane Katrina (2005) when it impacted the Gulf Coast, rupturing the levee in New Orleans (Berggren, 2005). [Pg.5]

MicroRNA (miRNA) and short interfering RNA (siRNA) are small RNA sequences that are from 21 to 25 nucleotides long. These recently discovered RNA molecules were the subject of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to Andrew Fire and Craig Mello. Their award was for gene silencing by double-stranded RNA. ... [Pg.225]

Andrew Furness is a charismatic safety professionai with over 25 years experience in both fire safety and risk management and heaith and safety fieids. As a Fire Safety Enforcing Officer for a iocai Fire Authority his roie was changed when he became the Heaith Safety Advisor to the Fire Brigade in Buckinghamshire. [Pg.431]

As Managing Director of Salvus Consulting Limited he has an active involvement leading his team delivering the new NEBOSH Fire Certificate programme. Andrew is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and a Graduate Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE). [Pg.431]

The insurance and reinsurance industry has traditionally used historical loss records to price fire, life, theft, and other risks on which there is plenty of experience data, and catastrophes were originally considered in conjunction with more common hazards. Ignoring their specific potential loss contribution resulted in unforeseen insolvencies for the insurance industry in events like hurricane Andrew in 1992. In order to better assess catastrophe risks, companies needed experience data that wasn t available. [Pg.761]
