The p-acetamidobenzenesulphonyl chloride (Section IX,9) must be pure under no circumstances should it contain more than 1-2 per cont. of the corresponding sulphonic acid. This may be ensured by lixiviating the sulphonyl chloride with pure anhydrous acetone and filtering the solution from the acid.

The most popular dry scrubbing systems for incinerators have involved the spray drying of lime slurries, followed by dry collection in electrostatic precipitators or fabric filters. Moller and Christiansen [Air Poll. Cont. Assoc. 84-9.5 (1984)] published data on early European technology. Moller et al. [U.S. Patent no. 4,889,698 (1989)] describe the newer extension of that technology to include both spray-dryer absorption and dry scrubbing with powdered, activated carbon injection. They claim greatly improved removal of mercury, dioxins, and NO,. 

High bumup of fissile material leads to a high fission product cont t in the fuel elements resulting in the formation of seminoble metal fission product alloys, which are insoluble in boiling nitric acid. The insoluble material ccmsists of mm sized metal particles of Ru, Rh, Tc, Mo, and Pd. These metal particles usually contain negligible amounts of uranium and plutonium and can be filtered as high level solid waste, HLSW. 

In most fihrations it is highly probable that more than one filtration mode occurs. When filtering suspensions of susp ded solids cont t above some threshold (usualfy 1% by volume) cake filtration is rapidly established. Below this value other mechanisms may be present for some time. An exan le of this is illustrated in Figure 2.20.
