Procedure (indirect method). Weigh out accurately 0.1-0.2 g of the ammonium salt into a 500 mL Pyrex conical flask, and add 100 mL of standard 0.1M sodium hydroxide. Place a small funnel in the neck of the flask in order to prevent mechanical loss, and boil the mixture until a piece of filter paper moistened with mercury(I) nitrate solution and held in the escaping steam is no longer turned black. Cool the solution, add a few drops of methyl red, and titrate with standard 0.1M hydrochloric acid. Repeat the determination. [Pg.302]

Procedure. Dissolve a weighed amount of ferro-manganese (about 0.40 g) in concentrated nitric acid and then add concentrated hydrochloric acid (or use a mixture of the two concentrated acids) prolonged boiling may be necessary. Evaporate to a small volume on a water bath. Dilute with water and filter directly into a 100 mL graduated flask, wash with distilled water and finally dilute to the mark. Pipette 25.0 mL of the solution into a 500 mL conical flask, add 5 mL of 10 per cent aqueous hydroxylammonium chloride solution, 10 mL of 20 per cent aqueous triethanolamine solution, 10-35 mL of concentrated ammonia solution, about 100 mL of water, and 6 drops of thymolphthalexone indicator solution. Procedure. Weigh out accurately about 2.5 g of finely powdered mercury(II) chloride, and dissolve it in 100 mL of water in a graduated flask. Shake well. Transfer 25.0 mL of the solution to a conical flask, add 25 mL water, 2mL 1M hydrochloric acid, and excess of 50 per cent phosphorous(III) acid solution. Stir thoroughly and allow to stand for 12 hours or more. Filter the precipitated mercury(I) chloride through a quantitative filter paper and wash the precipitate moderately with cold water. Transfer the precipitate with the filter paper quantitatively to a 250 mL reagent bottle, add 30 mL concentrated hydrochloric acid, 20 mL water, and 5 mL carbon tetrachloride or chloroform. Titrate the mixture with standard 0.025M potassium iodate in the usual manner (Section 11.127). [Pg.403]

B. Determination of tellurium Procedure. The solution should contain not more than 0.2 g tellurium in 50 mL of 3M hydrochloric acid (ca 25 per cent by volume of hydrochloric acid). Heat to boiling, add 15 mL of a freshly prepared, saturated solution of sulphur dioxide, then 10 mL of a 15 per cent aqueous solution of hydrazinium chloride, and finally 25 mL more of the saturated solution of sulphur dioxide. Boil until the precipitate settles in an easily filterable form this should require not more than 5 minutes. Allow to settle, filter through a weighed filtering crucible (sintered-glass, or porcelain), and immediately wash with hot water until free from chloride. Finally wash with ethanol (to remove all water and prevent oxidation), and dry to constant weight at 105 °C. Weigh as Te. [Pg.466]

C. Determination of mixtures of selenium and tellurium Procedure. Dissolve the mixed oxides (not exceeding 0.25 g of each) in 100 mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid, and add with constant stirring 50 mL cool concentrated hydrochloric acid which has been saturated with sulphur dioxide at the ordinary temperature.
