In addition to polyamide, lamination inks ordinarily contain modifiers such as polyketone resin, plasticizer, and wax to impart specific properties such as block resistance and increased bond strength. Because laminating inks are usually reverse-side printed and end-up sandwiched between films, gloss is not a primary requirement. Alkyd chemistry lends itself to further modification beyond choice of polyol, dibasic acid, and drying oil. Styrene, vinyl toluene, and methyl methacrylate are the most commonly used modifiers. In the presence of a free radical initiator, vinyl polymer will graft onto the alkyd. Tack-free time (i.e. a surface-dry film) may be reduced from 4 to 6 hoius for an unmodified alkyd to 1 hour in styrenated form. No reliable test methods for measuring the surface gloss of film laminates have, so far, been established. As such, the assessment of surface film gloss is best carried out visually. Evident graying is an indication of tiny air bubbles between board and film. These may be caused by inadequate application of adhesives, insufficient drying, or coalescence of the adhesive during lamination. Optical microscopy has also proven useful in confirming defect types in laminates. [Pg.222]

Whereas semigloss paints can use only one extender, dat paints, especially interior, can use combinations of three or more. Gloss paints typically do not use extenders, which decrease gloss. As a result, gloss paints lack the hardening effect of extenders and must rely on harder binders for adequate durabihty. Other types of extenders used in paints can have functional properties such as corrosion resistance, mildew resistance, and film-hardening effects.
