There are many reported examples of synergists used in combination with hydrated fillers. Examples are given in Table 7.2 however, this list is not exhaustive. In many of these cases, although beneficial effects are observed, the mechanisms of interaction are not clear or there are other reasons, such as cost, which limit their use industrially. [Pg.175]

The equation of state. Eg. (10), can also be employed for determining the surface energy of fillers. Examples for the fillers investigated are an N330 carbon black and an attrited N330 carbon black. The attrition process of the carbon black used consists of two parts. We first heat the carbon black in a vacuum oven at 150 C for 24 hours. We then ball-milled the carbon black at 25 -225 C for 48 hours. The amount of carbon black put into the ball mill container was about one third of the volume of the container. [Pg.112]

At first glance it appears that these systems do conform fully to the discussion above this is an oversimplification, however. The ortho and para hydrogens in phenol are not equal in reactivity, for example. In addition, the technology associated with these polymers involves changing the reaction conditions as the polymerization progresses to shift the proportions of several possible reactions. Accordingly, the product formed depends on the nature of the catalyst used, the proportions of the monomers, and the temperature. Sometimes other additives or fillers are added as well. [Pg.324]

Acid-Base Behavior. The relative acidity-basicity of the filler, generally determined by measuring the pH value of a slurry of a specific mass of filler in 100 mL of deionized water, can influence the behavior of a filler in some systems. For example, the curing behavior of some elastomers is sensitive to the pH value of carbon black. [Pg.367]

The vertical recessed plate automatic press, shown schematically in Figure 15 and described previously, is another example of a horizontal belt pressure filter. Cycle times ate short, typically between 10 and 30 minutes, and the operation is fully automated. The maximum cake thickness is about 35 mm washing and dewatering (by air displacement) of cakes is possible. Apphcations include treatment of mineral slurries, sugar, sewage sludge, and fillers like talc, clay, and whiting. [Pg.407]

Polypropylene polymers are typically modified with ethylene to obtain desirable properties for specific applications. Specifically, ethylene—propylene mbbers are introduced as a discrete phase in heterophasic copolymers to improve toughness and low temperature impact resistance (see Elastomers, ETHYLENE-PROPYLENE rubber). This is done by sequential polymerisation of homopolymer polypropylene and ethylene—propylene mbber in a multistage reactor process or by the extmsion compounding of ethylene—propylene mbber with a homopolymer. Addition of high density polyethylene, by polymerisation or compounding, is sometimes used to reduce stress whitening. In all cases, a superior balance of properties is obtained when the sise of the discrete mbber phase is approximately one micrometer. Examples of these polymers and their properties are shown in Table 2. Mineral fillers, such as talc or calcium carbonate, can be added to polypropylene to increase stiffness and high temperature properties, as shown in Table 3. [Pg.409]

Different phenoHc resins are used for different types of wood for example, plywood adhesives contain alkaline-catalyzed Hquid resole resins. Extension with a filler reduces cost, minimizes absorption, and increases bond strength. These resins have an alkaline content of 5—7% and are low in free phenol and formaldehyde. Because many resins have a high water content and limited storage stabiHty, they are frequently made at or near the mill producing the plywood product. The plywood veneers are dried, coated with resin, stacked for pressing, and cured at 140—150°C. [Pg.306]

Pure amorphous polymers, being homogeneous materials, are transparent. Atactic polystyrene is a good example. The crystalline syndiotactic form is not transparent. Alack of transparency does not necessarily indicate crystallinity, however. It can also be caused by inorganic fillers, pigments, gas bubbles (as in a foam), a second polymer phase, etc. [Pg.434]

Stringent OSHA composition limits exist for appHcations of brazing filler metals and solders. For example, only no-lead solders are permitted for joining parts that may come in contact with potable water. [Pg.246]
