Filicinic acid

Important antimicrobial activity is also described for phloroglucinol derivatives other than hyperforin. Thus, some of the phloroglucinols isolated from H. japonicum [55] have been assayed against Gram-positive bacteria and found to be particularly effective against S. aureus. The presence of a benzoyl group on the filicinic acid moiety, typical of their structure, seems to be essential for their bioactivity. [Pg.629]

Moreover, phloroglucinols from H. brasiliense, also containing a filicin acid moiety in their structure, have been found effective against B. subtilis [54]. [Pg.629]

Most studies were done on D. filix-mas, which contains 6.5-15% oleoresin. The oleoresin contains not less than 24% of the active principles filicin, which is a collective term for several ether-soluble phloroglucides (filixic acids, fla-... [Pg.54]

Dissolve 1 0 g of well-mixed sample in 20 ml of ether and transfer to a separator with a further 20 ml of ether. Add 50 ml of 3 per cent barium hydroxide solution, shake vigorously for five minutes and allow to separate. Filter the aqueous layer, wash the ether layer with two 5-ml quantities of water and filter the washings through the same filter pap r, adding them to the previous filtrate. Acidify with concentrated hydrochloric acid and extract with four successive quantities of 30, 20, 15 and 10 ml of chloroform. Combine the chloroform extracts, add 2 g of anhydrous sodium sulphate, shake and filter. Wash the sodium sulphate and filter with two 5-ml quantities of chloroform, adding the washings to the main chloroform solution. Evaporate the chloroform and dry the residue of filicin to constant weight at 100°. [Pg.397]
