Jaundice may result from a diminished bilirubin uptake in the liver cell. This is possibly caused by bile acids, medication or chemicals (e.g. vermicides such as flavaspidic acid). Extensive periods of fasting (N.A. Gu.bert et at, 1907 E. Meyer et af, 1922) (<300 calories/day, >48 hours) and toxaemia with sepsis (14, 18, 23) can also give rise to unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia. 

The active ingredients are phloroglucinol derivatives with two ring systems (flavaspidic acid, desaspidine) and with three ring systems (filix acid). 

Liver cell membranes isolated and incubated in buffered solutions of BSP (C36), bound 160 d=2 fig BSP per milligram of membrane protein. BSP binding was maximal at 500 /u.g of BSP per milliliter of incubation mixture and at pH values below 7. Maximum binding was completed in 3 minutes and unaffected by the addition of K+, Ca +, or CL. Tauro-cholate, bilirubin, and uranin had no effect on binding, but flavaspidic acid (see Section 7.3), iodipamide methylglucamine (see Section 7.1), and indocyanine green were inhibitory. 

The identification described below depends on chromatographic detection of active phloroglucinol derivatives, especially flavaspidic acid, obtained by concentration using the baryta method. The position of the active substances on the chromatogram is established by cochromatography of a standard solution of resorcinol and phloroglucinol both are commercially available substances which are not present in the drug extract, however.
