Nonclassical ions, a term first used by John Roberts (an outstanding Caltech chemist and pioneer in the field), were defined by Paul Bartlett of Harvard as containing too few electrons to allow a pair for each bond i.e., they must contain delocalized (T-electrons. This is where the question stood in the early 1960s. The structure of the intermediate 2-norbornyl ion could only be suggested indirectly from rate (kinetic) data and observation of stereochemistry no direct observation or structural study was possible at the time. [Pg.140]

By the beginning of the nineteenth centui"y, Fulton turned his attention to his obsession with submarines and steamships. He made uo secret of his goal for submarines—he intended to build them in order to destroy all ships of war so that appropriate attention could be devoted by society to the fields of education, industry and free speech. In 1801, he managed to stay under water for four hours and twenty minutes in one of his devices, and in 1805 he demonstrated the ability to utilize a torpedo to blow up a well built ship of two hundred tons. As suggested by Roberts and Moreland many years ago (1953), the acidity constants of 4-substituted bicyclooctane-l-carboxylic acids provide a very suitable system for defining a field/induction parameter. In this rigid system the substituent X is held firmly in place and there is little possibility for mesomeric delocalization or polarization interactions between X and COOH (or COO-). Therefore, it can be assumed that X influences the deprotonation of COOH only through space (the field effect) and through intervening o-bonds. On this basis Taft (1956, p. 595) and Swain and Lupton (1968) were able to calculate values for o and crR. [Pg.149]

An indication of growing interdisciplinary interest in the field is illustrated in a review on new perspectives in surface chemistry and catalysis by Roberts (.160), who discussed the interaction of N2 with iron surfaces. In so doing, he referred to the Fe (N2) , matrix Mdssbauer work of Barrett and Montano (7), which showed that molecular nitrogen only bonds to iron when the latter is present as a dimer. As the chemisorption studies (161) indicated that N2 is absorbed on singleatom sites, Roberts suggested (160), of the matrix data (7), "if this is correct, then our assignment of the N(ls) peak at 405 eV to end-on chemisorbed N2 will require further investigation.
