According to Summers and Chang from NASA s Ames Research Center, Moffett Field (1993), the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ provided a possibility for the reduction of nitrites and nitrates to ammonia. This reaction would have been of great importance, as NH3 is required in many syntheses of biogenesis precursors. The authors assume that nitrogen was converted to NO in a non-reducing atmosphere, and thence to nitrous and nitric acids. These substances entered the primeval oceans in the form of acid rain , and here underwent reduction to NH3 with the help of Fe2+, thus raising the pH of the oceans to 7.3. Arthur L. Weber (1998), now working at the Seti Institute of the Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, reports the successful synthesis of amino acid thioesters from formose substrates (formaldehyde and glycolaldehyde) and ammonia synthesis of alanine and homoserine was possible when thiol catalysts were added to the reaction mixture. On the basis of his experimental results, Weber (1998) suggests the process shown in Fig. 7.10 to be a general prebiotic route to amino acid thioesters. [Pg.208]

Containers, media and seeds. Glass Petri dishes, 100 x 15 cm, were used with two sheets of 75-mm Whatman 41 filter paper as the absorptive medium. Ten seeds of TAM105 wheat were placed in a radial pattern with the micropyle end toward the center between the two sheets of filter paper. Seeds were hand-selected for normal size and absence of damage. TAM105 was selected because it is the variety used in the ongoing field research on conservation tillage practices.
