Moore (1998) suggested that the data available could be interpreted in terms of an ice crust 10-15 km thick. Christopher Chyba from the SETI Institute (Mountain View, California) has published articles in Nature (2000), the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2001a) and in Science (2001b) in which he suggests that a detailed study of this Jovian moon is necessary he discusses the possibility of a complex ecosystem, nourished by the radiation coming from outer space, on or in the ice layers of the moon. The planned Europa orbiter mission may provide certainty on this, but at least another five years of uncertainty lie ahead. The use of a submersible robot to study the (possible) ocean layer and its floor has been discussed. [Pg.51]

Arthur L. Weber (1998), now working at the Seti Institute of the Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, reports the successful synthesis of amino acid thioesters from formose substrates (formaldehyde and glycolaldehyde) and ammonia synthesis of alanine and homoserine was possible when thiol catalysts were added to the reaction mixture. On the basis of his experimental results, Weber (1998) suggests the process shown in Fig. 7.10 to be a general prebiotic route to amino acid thioesters. [Pg.208]

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence was originally coordinated by the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, founded in 1984 however, in 1992,... [Pg.301]

In March 2002, a team of researchers from the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported on an important breakthrough in the search for amino acids in the ISM. These researchers attempted to reproduce in their laboratory the conditions found in the ISM. They enclosed a mixture of molecules already known to exist in the ISM in a container cooled to 15K under a pressure of about 10 8 torr (a pressure of 1 torr is equal to 1 mm of mercury),... [Pg.26]
