For some types of wetting more than just the contact angle is involved in the basic mechanism of the action. This is true in the laying of dust and the wetting of a fabric since in these situations the liquid is required to penetrate between dust particles or between the fibers of the fabric. The cleaning process proceeds by one of three primary mechanisms solubilization, emulsification, and roll-up [229]. In solubilization the oily phase partitions into surfactant micelles that desorb from the solid surface and diffuse into the bulk. As mentioned above, there is a body of theoretical work on solubilization [146, 147] and numerous experimental studies by a variety of spectroscopic techniques [143-145,230]. Emulsification involves the formation and removal of an emulsion at the oil-water interface the removal step may involve hydrodynamic as well as surface chemical forces. Normalised fiber mechanical properties are expressed in terms of unit linear density. For example, in describing the action of a load on a fiber in a tensile test, units of N/tex or gram force per denier (gpd) are generally used. If this is done, the term tenacity should be used in place of stress. The resistance to plastic flow can be schematically illustrated by dashpots with characteristic viscosities. The resistance to deformations within the elastic regions can be characterized by elastic springs and spring force constants. In real fibers, in contrast to ideal fibers, the mechanical behavior is best characterized by simultaneous elastic and plastic deformations. Materials that undergo simultaneous elastic and plastic effects are said to be viscoelastic. Percentage of water imbibition is an important property in ease-of-care and quick-drying fabrics. This value is determined by measuring the moisture remaining in a fiber in equiUbrium with air at 100% rh while the fiber is being centrifuged at forces up to 1000 g. The average recorded value for acetate is 24% triacetate not heat-treated, 16% and heat-treated triacetate, 10%. [Pg.293]

Extrusion Processes. Polymer solutions are converted into fibers by extmsion. The dry-extmsion process, also called dry spinning, is primarily used for acetate and triacetate. In this operation, a solution of polymer in a volatile solvent is forced through a number of parallel orifices (spinneret) into a cabinet of warm air the fibers are formed by evaporation of the solvent. In wet extmsion, a polymer solution is forced through a spinneret into a Hquid that coagulates the filaments and removes the solvent. In melt extmsion, molten polymer is forced through a multihole die (pack) into air, which cools the strands into filaments. [Pg.296]

Other elastomeric-type fibers iaclude the biconstituents, which usually combine a polyamide or polyester with a segmented polyurethane-based fiber. These two constituents ate melt-extmded simultaneously through the same spinneret hole and may be arranged either side by side or ia an eccentric sheath—cote configuration. As these fibers ate drawn, a differential shrinkage of the two components develops to produce a hehcal fiber configuration with elastic properties. An appHed tensile force pulls out the helix and is resisted by the elastomeric component. Kanebo Ltd. has iatroduced a nylon—spandex sheath—cote biconstituent fiber for hosiery with the trade name Sidetia (6). [Pg.304]

Most extmded latex fibers are double covered with hard yams in order to overcome deficiencies of the bare threads such as abrasiveness, color, low power, and lack of dyeabiUty. During covering, the elastic thread is wrapped under stretch which prevents its return to original length when the stretch force is removed thus the fiber operates farther on the stress—strain curve to take advantage of its higher elastic power. Covered mbber fibers are commonly found in narrow fabrics, braids, surgical hosiery, and strip lace. [Pg.310]
