Fiber melt spinning

Both fiber producers and fabric mills have realized that many of the performance variants that are difficult to iacorporate iato fiber melt spinning can be accompHshed by post-treating yams or fabrics. Mills ia the 1990s can apply flame retardants, softeners, dye-fade inhibitors, and stain- and soil-resisting agents as part of the finishing of a fabric. 

The polymerized product is an extremely insoluble material and must be melt-spun, as discussed later. Therefore, should a delustered or precolored fiber be desired, it is necessary to add the titanium dioxide or colored pigment to the polymerization batch prior to solidification. For ease of handling, the batch of nylon polymer may be extruded from the autoclave to form a thin ribbon, which is easily broken down into chips after rapid cooling. But, whenever possible, the liquid polymer is pumped directly to the fiber melt spinning operation (see Fig. 12.14). 

As discussed above, there have been major improvements in catalyst efficiency and selectivity. The amount of atactic polymer has been reduced, and the number of pounds of polymer produced per pound of catalyst has been increased from five- to tenfold and more. Polymerization in the gas phase has been improved [73] in order that resin with low atactic content can be produced without solvent removal or polymer washing. The new processes [74] have reduced and, in some cases, eliminated the purification and solvent recovery steps, thereby simplifying the polymerization process and reducing the cost of a polymer plant. In addition, the new processes yield polymers with reduced catalyst residues and fewer gels, resulting in better filterability and improved pack life during fiber melt spinning.

Data on extensional stresses in fiber melt spinning, and their constitutive modeling for both isothermal and nonisothermal fiber spinning, can be found in the several books referred to earlier. Further modeling elforts are discussed by Denn.(66) However, it is fair to say that no totally acceptable rheological model has so far been found to quantitatively explain viscoelastic fiber-spinning results. The question of rheological constitutive equations is examined briefly in Section 7.
