Fiber mat veil

Fiber mat veil An ultra-thin mat similar to a surface mat, often composed of organic fibers as well as glass fibers (Table 2.18). 

Gel coat In RP processing a gel coat on the outer surface can be used to ensure a smooth surface appearance and a tough surface. It could contain a thin synthetic fiber veil to improve performance of the gel coat and/or a surfacing mat. It is a quick setting plastic and gelled prior to reinforcement layup. The gel coat becomes an integral part of the finished RP product. 

Frequently, to provide resistance to weathering, erosion, or chemical attack, a resin-rich surface coat (gel coat) is added. This surface layer is applied first and then allowed to stiffen into a tough layer (not cured) before additional layers are applied. It usually is reinforced with a surface veil using C-glass (rather than the usual E-glass) if chemical resistance is required, or a synthetic fiber veil may be used for resistance to weather, particularly sunlight. The resin may be a special formulation that includes TP to improve the surface appearance. Subsequent layers of mat, fabric, or combinations are then applied.

Glass fibers also come in surface veil configuration. These veils are lightweight fiberglass reinforcement mats, customarily used to provide extra environmental protection and a smooth appearance, especially when used in conjunction with gel-coats (a special resin used to provide a high-quality finish on the visible surface of a fiber-reinforced composite material).

Surfacing mat, or veil, is used in conjunction with reinforcing mats and fabrics to provide good surface finish. It is effective in blocking out the fiber pattern of the underlying mat or fabric. Surfacing mats are also used as the inside layers of corrosion resistant composites, providing a smooth, resin-rich surface.
