Pellet Mills Pellet mills operate on the principle shown in Fig. 20-92. Moist, plastic feed is pushed through holes in dies of various shapes. The friction of the material in the die holes supplies the resistance necessary for compaction. Adjustable knives shear the rodlike extrudates into pellets of the desired length. Although several designs are in use, the most commonly used pellet mills operate by applying power to the die and rotating it around a freely turning roller with Fixed horizontal or vertical axis. [Pg.1901]

The q-line starts on the x-axis at Xp. The value of q is the same as for conventional McCabe-Thiele. The slope of the q-line in the Ryan graph is the McCabe-Thiele slope minus 1. Therefore for bubble point feed the q-line is vertical for the conventional McCabe-Thiele and Ryan. For dew point feed the slope is 0 for the conventional McCabe-Thiele and -1 for Ryan. [Pg.55]

An elegant NMR experiment by the group of Lynn Jelinski at Cornell University has established that at least part of the microcrystals is built up from the polyalanine repeats in the protein chains. These experiments, which were made on C-enriched proteins produced by feeding the spiders C-labeled alanine, showed that there were two populations of alanine side chains, one ordered and oriented perpendicular to the fiber axis and a second less ordered. Jelinski s interpretation is that parts of the polyalanine sequences are incorporated as p strands in the microcrystals with an orientation parallel to the fiber axis. Whether or not the Gly-Gly-X repeats also form P strands in the microcrystals remains an open question. [Pg.290]
